Setting up Junos Pulse VPN Client
Posted by Gerard Au on 04 April 2014 06:28 PM

This article explains how to install the Junos Pulse VPN Client on a Macintosh computer (OS 10.9)

Computers and Laptops

1.  Login to http://vpn.csusb.edu/ using your CoyoteID and password

2.  Start Network Connect

Mobile Devices (iPhone, Android, etc.)

  1. Download a Junos Pulse App - for example: Juno Pulse for iOS
  2. Configure the app URL option to use https://vpn.csusb.edu Or, if that fails, use https://vpn.csusb.edu/pulse

Network Connect on OS X

Some security updates from Apple interfere with the functionality of Network Connect on OS X.

Java Conflicts

A recent security update from Apple disables Java for those who do not use it frequently. The Network Connect client for the VPN depends on Java.

  1. Try using Applications → Utilities → Java Preferences to "Enable applet plug-in and Web Start applications" . They try launching Network Connect after logging in to https://vpn.csusb.edu

  2. If 1 does not work. You may have better results installing the Network Connect client from this download and launching from Macintosh HD → Applications.

    Download NetworkConnect.dmg

Transparent Username/Password

Additionally, because of Safari updates, you may encounter transparent Username and Password fields.

From http://kb.iu.edu/data/aygt.html

The Network Connect client for Mac OS X can, in some situations, display transparent "Username" and "Passphrase" fields, and clicking in these fields can cause the Network Connect window to disappear behind another window or lose focus, preventing users from entering their credentials. To work around this problem, when the Network Connect window appears, do not click inside any field; instead, while the Network Connect window is active, use the Tab key to move to the correct field, and then type your username and passphrase as normal.

Error Reference

  • An error occurred while extracting one of the Network Connect components.
  • Failed to launch Network Connect

Troubleshooting

If you're having trouble using Junos Pulse or Network Connect, please try the following:

  1. Try clearing your Java cache
  2. Try the Repair Junos Pulse utility

  3. Try to manually install the stable version of Junos Pulse:
    Pulse for Windows (64-bit)
    Pulse for Windows (32-bit)
    Pulse for OS X
  4. Try to manually install a release candidate version of Junos Pulse:
    Pulse for Windows 64-bit 5.0r2.0-b43445
    Pulse for Mac 5.0r2.0-b43445
  5. Finally, try installing the older Network Connect. If a link prompts you to login, do login, then use your browser's back button and follow the same link a second time:
    Network Connect - Windows (64-bit)
    Network Connect - Windows (32-bit)
    Network Connect - OS X
